Photography M.A. Student at University of Tehran, Class of 2021

I remember whenever my mother and I would sit down and flip through the photo albums, I would constantly ask: ‘Who’s this? Who’s that?’ and the names and relationships my mother told me would quickly fade from my memory. Among the old photos, there were some that I liked more, especially the group photos from June of nineteen-eighty-something, which showed us a different atmosphere than their time. My mother says, “It was during the final exams of our senior year of high school and we had gathered to study together.” It’s clear from the photos that they did everything but study; in a few pictures, they’re posing with books, but I think we’ve all done that! We’ve captured sweet moments with photos to be mementos of friendships, moments that will live forever and that, from everyone’s perspective, can create a different narrative.

The book in front of you attempts to showcase the everyday life and special moments of young Iranian girls in the

1980s and 90s. Two decades that themselves are full of ambiguity and mystery, one after the revolution and its effects, and the other the beginning of the lifestyle of the post-revolutionary generations. All the photos have been collected from the albums of our “mothers”, and the photographer, except for the photos’ owners, remains unknown.”
